Itinerary Summary

Day 1

Welcome to Scotland

On arrival in Edinburgh you will be greeted and transferred to The Balmoral Hotel located in the heart of the city. After settling into your hotel, discover Edinburgh boasting a vibrant cultural scene, dramatic past and stunning historic sites.

Day 2

Discovering Edinburgh

After breakfast, enjoy a private walking tour around the historic Old Town and explore the Royal Mile, Grassmarket and some of the city’s hidden alleyways. The rest of the day is at your leisure.

Day 3

The Belmond Royal Scotsman

You will be met at your hotel and escorted to the Belmond Royal Scotsman train, which will be waiting at Waverley Station. As you settle in to your cabin the train will travel north, crossing the Firth of Forth via the magnificent Forth Railway Bridge. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon tea as you pass Arboath, Montrose and Aberdeen before arriving in Keith. In the evening, enjoy an informal dinner and perhaps a nightcap with your fellow guests in the Observation Car.

Day 4

Exploring the Highlands

Leave Keith this morning as the train travels west along the Moray Firth towards Inverness, capital of the Highlands. Later, enjoy a delicious lunch as the the train heads towards Kyle of Lochalsh, arguably the most scenic railway route in the UK. Disembark in picturesque Plockton – take a boat trip to see wild seals or enjoy a dram and a traditional Highland welcome in the Plockton Hotel. Alternatively, visit Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most iconic sights. Spend the night on board in Kyle of Lochalsh. Dinner is formal, followed by coffee and liqueurs in the Observation Car, which offers mesmerising views over Loch Alsh to the Isle of Sky.

Day 5

Exploring the Highlands

After breakfast, have your cameras at the ready as you retrace the route north to Inverness then south to Carrbridge where you disembark to explore romantic Ballindalloch Castle. The night is spent on board at Boat of Garten on the private Strathspey Railway. After an informal dinner, a highlander regales guests with Scottish tales and weaponry displays.

Day 6

Exploring the Highlands

The day begins with a visit to the stunning Rothiemurchus Estate in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, where fishing, clay pigeon shooting, or a tour of the estate can be enjoyed. Rejoining the train at Kingussie, lunch is served during the journey south to Dunkeld where you disembark for a visit to Glamis Castle, childhood home of the late Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. After rejoining the train in Perth, relax and enjoy a formal farewell dinner.

Day 7

Back to Edinburgh

After breakfast the train heads back to Edinburgh, where you disembark for your onward travel arrangements.
