As we’ve just celebrated Easter, the sacrifice of Jesus Christ is fresh in our minds. See the famed events unfold as you relive the Easter story at the 2020 Oberammergau Passion Play.

In 1633, when The Plague was ravaging Europe, the villagers of Oberammergau turned to God, asking that no more of their inhabitants should succumb to this terrible illness. Their prayers were heard and answered. The following year, the villagers performed a Passion Play out of gratitude for their survival. This powerful act of worship and devotion has been performed every tenth year since.

Through the Passion Play, over 2000 participants express their religious conviction and bring the story of Jesus of Nazareth to life. From his entry to Jerusalem to the Last Supper, the crucifixion and his glorious Resurrection, be drawn into these events of this most significant life. Watch the events we remember each Easter unfold before you.

For more than 2000 years, this man’s life has brought hope to people across the globe. In 2020, the 42nd Passion Play season will offer a solemn reenactment. This inspirational performance is powerful, touching and leads to deep reflection.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Germany

Perhaps spend a night or so in Munich to explore the culturally rich Bavarian capital.

Day 2

Oberammergau Passion Play

Head to the village of Oberammergau.  Spend the morning at leisure and enjoy lunch before the Passion Play performance. The play is set in two acts with a break for dinner. Overnight in Oberammergau.*

Day 3

Travel to the Black Forest

Depart Oberammergau and head towards the Black Forest to your chosen resort for the next four nights. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 4

Black Forest Panorama

Visit Freiburg dominated by its Gothic Minster, the Schlossberg and the remains of three castles. Continue along Schauinsland and Feldberg roads via Schluchsee, to the beautiful lakeside resort of Titisee. There will be time for a short cruise and to taste some traditional Black Forest Gâteau.

Day 5

Day at Leisure

Use this day to relax and enjoy your hotel and surroundings.

Day 6

Triberg Waterfalls and Cuckoo Clocks

Drive to the Glotter Valley, arriving in St. Peter before travelling along the Panorama Road and visit Fürtwangen, home of the German Cuckoo Clock Museum (not included). Continue to Triberg, home to the highest waterfalls in Germany.

Day 7


Commence your journey home, or why not extend your visit? Perhaps cross the border into France to explore the Champagne region or explore the tiny country of Luxembourg.

Titisee: Maritim Hotel ****

The Maritim Hotel is surrounded by forested mountains and is situated next to Lake Titisee. It is a 10-minute walk from Titisee train station and 3.5 km from the observation deck of the 19th-century Hochfirst Tower. The air conditioned rooms include a TV and minibar, as well as sitting areas and furnished balconies or terraces with forest or lake views. There is also a cafe with a lakeside terrace, 2 bars and a beer garden.

Gengenbach: Schwarzwald Hotel ****

The Schwarzwald Hotel is set opposite Gengenbach’s historic centre, on the banks of the river Kinziga. It is a 12-minute walk from the Niggelturm carnival museum, 14 minutes from Gengenbach train station and 12 km from Moos mountain in the Black Forest. The airy rooms come with free Wi-Fi, TVs, balconies and minibars. Suites and apartments add kitchenettes and living areas. Amenities include a casual restaurant and an elegant bar with wood-panelled walls and ceilings, plus an indoor pool, a sauna, a gym and a wellness spa.

Breitnau: Hofgut Sternen ***

The Hofgut Sternen hotel is surrounded by countryside, 8 km from Titisee lake and 11 km from Feldberg ski area. The airy rooms feature free Wi-Fi, TVs, and coffee-making facilities. Some have balconies and/or pull-out sofas. There are also 6 contemporary studios and suites in the glass-blowing workshop, as well as rustic-style rooms in a classic guesthouse. There is a restaurant serving regional specialities, as well as a buffet eatery with a beer garden. Other amenities include glass-blowing and cuckoo clock workshops.
